 STAFF

Helene Fallon
Project Director

Helene

Welcome to the Long Island Parent Center (LIPC) sponsored through the Center for Community Inclusion (CCI) at the C.W. Post Campus of Long Island University. Our work is so very exciting. As many of you know, I am a parent of two young adults with special needs, and a professional in the field of education. I am honored to be coordinating this project and to be working with CCI to maximize our mission. My focus in life and in my professional capacity has always been building positive relationships. As we move forward with the work of the Long Island Parent Center, building positive educational teams will always be a priority. Parents and families of children with special needs, as well as the students themselves, are the link to improving outcomes. Our goal is to provide technical assistance, support, and resources to families and the professionals that work with them.  We are here to serve you and truly look forward to our work together. Please feel free to contact us to arrange a training, ask a question, or just check in!

I would like to take this opportunity to say how excited I am to continue my work at the Long Island Parent Center and to be a part of the team at the Center for Community Inclusion at the C. W. Post Campus of LIU. I am currently the Bilingual Education Outreach Coordinator providing technical assistance to parents and professionals who are serving children with special needs. In my current role, I will continue to present workshops to parents and professionals on various educational topics in both English and Spanish.  As a former teacher for the New York City Department of Education, I understand the demands placed on educators in challenging systems. As a parent of a child with special needs, I continue to experience the barriers and breakthroughs of raising a child in our education system. I recognize how overwhelming it can be, but when a goal is reached, there is nothing more rewarding. I am currently a member of the NYS Education Department's Commissioner's Advisory Panel for Special Education, representing parents and families. I am the co-president of the Special Education Parent Teacher Association (SEPTA) in my school district, and continue to serve on various committees and task forces always focused on improving outcomes for our children.

I am thrilled to be working with the Long Island Parent Center and the Early Childhood Direction Center hosted by the Center for Community Inclusion at Long Island University.  Currently, I am the President of Randy K. I identify myself as a dynamic, results oriented professional with a wealth of experience in general and special education. As a mother of three children, including one with special education needs, currently in our education systems, I am committed to working with families, teachers and administrators to create the best educational outcomes for all students.

Working for the Long Island Parent Center and the Long Island Early Childhood Direction Center is extremely rewarding and gives me the opportunity to learn something new every day.  I have over ten years of experience working with children with disabilities and their parents. In addition, I have extensive experience navigating the foster care and adoption systems in our region. As the proud parent of three children with special needs who are adopted, I bring an extremely unique perspective to our project. I have navigated the service systems from Foster Care to Adoption to Early Intervention to CPSE, and CSE. I was instrumental in beginning a grass roots SEPTA that brought together seven rural districts, and continue to organize speakers, trainings, and technical assistance for families and professionals.  I have years of training in peer mentoring and family support, I am a Partners in Policy Making 2012 graduate and have extensive training in suicide prevention and schools and mental health . Growing up in Holland gave me the opportunity to learn to speak 4 languages (German, French, Dutch, English fluently and I work on learning Spanish every day!). My devotion and passion is to improve overall outcomes for all children and look forward to continuing this work for a long time to come.
